A handing over ceremony occured at the Western Marine Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ibafo, Apapa Lagos this warm Monday morning where the Customs Area Controller of the Command OA Salefu detailed the amount of Cannabis Sativa that was being transfered to the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA). At the occasion to receive the illegal substance with his men was the Marine Commander of the NDLEA, Paul Ahom.

Comptroller Salefu in his address said “In upholding the spirit of the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed between the Nigeria Customs Service and the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency on the 4th of April 2023 to ensure synergy and collaboration in tackling the illicit drugs along Nigeria’s entry and exit points, the Service under the leadership of the CGC BA Adeniyi has directed the Western Marine Command to hand over a total of 120 sacks containing 10,551 loaves of cannabis sativa with a total value of Seven Hundred and Four Million, Five Hundred and Eight Thousand Naira (#704,518,000.00) only to the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA)”.

The drugs were seized in three different operations while the men of the WMC were carrying out their regular operational duties at Jegemo Island opposite Iworo Ajido Waterfront and Asipa Beach along Seme Borders on the 29th of November 2023, 2nd of December 2023 and 9th of January 2024.

CAC Salefu added that “The seizure is a product of hard work, dedication and bravery of officers who worked with diligence and integrity as well as the Command’s wide network of intelligence”.

The traders in this banned substance are still at large, but CAC Salefu promised through thorough investigation and cooperation with the NDLEA to apprehend them.

The Marine Commander of the NDLEA, Paul Ahom praised the collaborative efforts of the two agencies in trying to rid the nation of illegal substances and their harmful effects and promised to continue to cement the relationship for the betterment of the nation.
