Maritime journalists were gathered, Friday at the auditorium of the Apapa Command, Nigeria Customs Service to undergo a training programme with the theme: Commercial Terms And Phrases In The Nigerian Maritime Industry.

The event which was organised by the Tin Can Island Port Command in conjunction with the Roam Media Concept was tailored to educate journalists about different terms, phrases and methodologies in modern Maritime operation in order that they might be better equipped to report the industry much better.

Innocent Orok, the chief executive officer of the Roam Media Concept recalled that the idea of the training workshop was muted after he reacted to Comptroller Dera Nnadi’s post on a Whatsapp platform, he added that “This is just the first phase, as every practicing Journalist will benefit from the subsequent editions. Let me state here that the intension of the initiator of this noble idea is for us the Maritime Journalists to take it, own it and institutionalise it as a yearly, twice yearly or quarterly training workshop”.

The Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi was represented at the event by Comptroller Dera Nnadi. In his speech, Comptroller Nnadi said “I encourage all participants to engage actively, share insights, and ask questions. Your expertise as maritime journalists is invaluable in disseminating accurate information and educating the public about the vital role of the maritime industry”.

“We will continue to work together to improve the customs operations place in facilitating trade and economic growth. Together, let us deepen our understanding of the language that drives our industry forward, and strengthen the partnerships that will help us meet the challenges of the future”.

The Customs Area Controller of the Apapa Command of the Nigeria Customs Service, Comptroller Babatunde Olomu was also at the event as the host Command. The training programme had about fifty journalists in attendance as they were made to broaden their knowledge in the different terminologies used in the industry.

Two papers were presented. The first was from the deputy managing director of the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Jacob Iosso who spoke on ‘The Operating Environment: Commercial Terms And Phrases Used By Shipping Companies /Lines In Nigeria Ports’.

The second paper with the title ‘The Operating Environment: Commercial Terms And Phrases Used In The Twenty First Century Customs Operation’ was presented by Chief Supretendent of Customs D. Ibrahim and these papers gave deeper insights into the world of terminologies in Maritime business operation. CSC Ibrahim traced the history of the various policies with the peculiar terms and phrases used since the inception of the Nigeria Customs Service down to the newly launched ‘B’ Odogwu portal that has integrated all aspects of different operations within the maritime sector.

Goodwill messages were sent by some journalists as the occasion was also used to honour some veteran journalists as well as some other participants within the maritime space.
