The Lekki Free Zone Command of the Nigeria Customs Service with Comptroller Olanrewaju Olumoh as the Customs Area Controller today handed over 2×40 foot containers laden with illicit medicaments to the Lekki Deep Sea Port Commander of the National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) Jonah Achema (NC).

The illicit pharmaceutical products which were imported from Karachi, Pakistan and handed over at a ceremony which took place within the premises of the Lekki Deep Sea Port are as listed.

b. 1x40ft Contai ntainer Number TLLU751904) Found to Contain;

1. 115 cartonns of Trama King 225mg (tablets)

il. 245 cartons of Tamra| 225m (tablets)

The drugs have a duty paid value (DPV) of Nine Billion Seven Hundred and Twenty Five Million Naira (₦9,725,000,000.00) only .
Comptroller Olumoh harped on the imperative nature of the collaboration between the different sisiter agencies which culminated in the seizure of these containers with the dangerous contents in them.

This he said is line with the policy of the Comptroller-General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi whose tireless support has manifested in the performance of the 13 Free Zones under the Lekki Free Zone Command.

His words “It should be borne in mind that even though our command here is relatively young in terms of year of establishment, our location is strategic to fight against illicit trade. Hence, in line with the vision of the CGC, we have been very committed to promoting international trade and investment, facilitating legitimate trade and doing everything possible to advance the economic progress of the country especially by making our seaport in Lekki the maritime hub in the West Africa sub region.”

“However, in performing this role of facilitating a business-friendly environment, we have a critical function to perform in terms of preventing our port and the free zones from becoming a channel through which illicit items enter the country”.

It is also to be noted that the Lekki Free Zone Command has from January to October 2024 generated the sum of Two Hundred and Seventy-Eight Billion, Seven Hundred and Eighty Four Million, Nine Hundred and Fifty Five Thousand, Six Hundred and Fifty Three Naira, only (N278,784,955,653) as revenue into the coffers of government.

Comptroller Olumoh warns those who are not ready for legitimate businesses to steer clear of the Command as he and his team are ready to do all that is necessary to protect the national economy. In terms terms of revenue generation he added that ” We are passionate in making sure the tempo is maintained and improved upon”.

The LDSP Commander of the NDLEA, Jonah Achema (NC) in his acceptance speech extolled the collaborative efforts put in to monitor and eventually seize the two containers carrying the illicit medicaments. He noted that stronger modalities are being put in place to continue to detect illicit products such as these in order to safeguard public health.
