The Africa Association of Professional Freight Forwarders and Logistics in Nigeria (APFFLON) has commended the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) for their decision to suspend the nationwide strike action that they had embarked on a day ago.

A press statement released to journalists by the president of the Association, Otunba Frank Ogunojemite says “APFFLON is not ignorant of the excruciating pains and hardships the fuel subsidy removal has brought upon Nigerians, and also knows the negative sides of shutting down the nation’s economy, that is the reason why the leaderships of the labour unions should always consider and reconsider their stance and we commend the suspension of the strike”.

They therefore ask the organised labour to give the president the benefit of doubt and watch if the government would not expedite actions towards ameliorating the sufferings of Nigerians.

The statement adds that “APFFLON is not against Labour protesting against anti- people policies of the government but we are concerned about its attendant effects on the masses, especially those who get their daily bread by going out to shed their wares or engage in menial jobs on daily basis. The skyrocketing prices of commodities and continuous emasculation of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) is a big threat to the livelihoods of many families”.

The statement detailed the attendant effects of any strike action declared by the two foremost labour organisations saying that strike actions always directly affect costs of clearing of cargoes as these cause delay and aslo incur demurage and again that the Labour bodies never bother to meet with freight forwarders in order to get their heartbeat on all the problems encountered along the logistics supply chain.

On the other hand, the freight forwarders pressure group admonished the government in saying that “We also call on the Federal Government to slash the salaries and allowances of political office holders. The cost of governance in Nigeria is outrageously high, and continuing in that trajectory and expecting different results amounts to self deceit”.

The statement added that “APFFLON appreciates the leadership of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria- MWUN for approaching the industrial action from a different perspective, the country belongs to all of us and we appeal to both NLC and TUC to sincerely use their discretion before taking decisions”.

The Association also used the occasion to formally reorganise its Tin Can chapter executive as the Mr. Emeka Nwosu has been routinely moved to the national head quarters as the business and commerce development officer to help use his mettle in developing some commercial ideas. In his place is the new chapter chairman, Akeem Ayobiojo with some new executive members which include, Jibrin U. Usman as the vice chairman, Rasheed Tijani, secretary, Busayo Okpara as the national welfare officer and Peter Sunday Mbamaonyeukwu as the treasurer.
