Story by Dili Utomi.

A society gets better in a bid to achieve its set goals and objectives when the component parts and indeed the whole strata of such a society consciously and properly channels its energy towards achieving such set goals. It is in conformity with this principle and the age long maxim of ‘practice what you preach’ that the Bishop Ajayi Crowther Memorial Anglican Church (BACMAC), Gowon Estate, Egbeda Lagos has embarked on and completed the renovation of a security post within the confines of the Kirikiri Security Custodial Centre of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Apapa Lagos.

The commisioning of the Security Post was performed last Saturday with the Vicar of the Church, Venerable Taiwo Olupitan leading the members of his choir to the occasion. At the occasion also were members of the security arm of the Correctional Centre led by ACC Ogunshakin who represented DCC Emeka Ogbuji, the officer in charge of the medium section of the Correctional Centre where the renovated security Post is situated. ACC Ogunshakin expressed his gratitude to BACMAC for the gesture as he detailed the vital importance of the security Post to the centre.  ACC Ogunshakin encourages other well meaning members of the public to emulate the good gesture of the BACMAC.

We later spoke with the Deputy Comptroller in charge of the medium security section of the Correctional Centre, Emeka Ogbuji who also commended BACMAC and urged public spirited individuals to emulate this laudable gesture.

Venerable Taiwo Olupitan in company of his assistants, the director of music at the church, Kelechi Agu also led members of his choir to the church chapel within the medium section of the centre for choral music ministeration and a few words of exhortation. The programme lasted the best of three hours and also had the chapel filled with inmates that were eager to be part of the event. The entourage were taken round the facility afterwards and the National Open University Nigeria study centre was shown to them as well as the hospital and the trade centre were shoemaking, laundry and barbing as well as other economic activities take place.

Speaking with us afterwards, Venerable Taiwo Olupitan said that he is there to represent the Bishop of the Diocese of Lagos West, Right Reverend James Olushola Odedeji and aslo to do choral evangelism, but that since the Lord laid it in their minds to do something tangible within the Correctional Centre, they had to renovate the security centre. He pointedly affirm that the church as a duty is obliged to do the work of charity and so they will always do their bit in order to carry out this aspect of their evangelism. Ven. Olupitan also calls on people who are touched by the spirit of God to do more for the society through charity.
