The Murtala Mohammed Airport Command of the Nigeria Customs Service this afternoon held a press briefing where the performance of the Command was detailed. The Customs Area Controller of the Command, Mohammed Sani Yusuf at the occasion outlined the figures as well as the factors that helped the Command to perform much better than they did in 2022.
His words “The Command collected revenue to the tune of Ninety billion, four hundred and twenty six million, one hundred and eighty five thousand, and four hundred and forty seven naira, one kobo (N90,426,185,447.01k) only in customs duty and other charges. In comparison to the revenue collected same period in 2022 which stood at Sixty nine billion, seven hundred and sixty eight million, five hundred and ninety seven thousand and seventy nine naira. (69,768,597,079.00) only. This clearly shows a progressive difference of Twenty billion, six hundred and fifty seven million, six hundred seventy five thousand and eight hundred and forty nine naira twenty two kobo (20,657,675,849.22k) depicting (29.61%) increase of collection”.
Comptroller Yusuf whose steady hands have generally manifested in the Command performing much better than was hitherto obtained credits the Command’s performance largely to the resilience of staff owing also to their motivation and better orientation of stakeholders who are made to adhere strictly to import/export guidelines in tandem with extant laws.
“In the area of anti-smuggling, the command made a total of Ten (10) seizures in 2023. The items include Tramadol, Military camouflage jackets, Military hardwares, counterfeit medicaments, Dried shark fins and Dried donkey genitals with the cumulative Duty Paid Value (DPV) of Forty Seven Billion, Two Hundred and Seven Million, Four Hundred And Twenty Four Thousand, Three Hundred And Eighty Nine Naira and Eighty Four Kobo (47,207,424,389.84k) only. These items were seized mainly because of various forms of infractions which range from false declarations, non compliance with the estimated threshold and failure to comply with other extant regulations as enshrined in the Nigeria Customs Service Act (NCS ACT)”.
The CAC praised the good inter agency collaboration that the Command has been enjoying and urged stakeholders to continue to explore his open door policy in order that every grey area is always rapidly ironed out as he promised to continue to plug all revenue loopholes.
