The ancient town of Epe came alive on Sunday, September 15, 2024, as friends, family, and dignitaries gathered to celebrate the life and legacy of late Chief Mukadam Tele Olukoya.
The event which began with special prayers at the family compound was followed by a grand reception at the Reverend Father’s Old House field along Mojoda-Ibonwon road.
In attendance were, Royal Fathers from far and near, the Nigeria Custom Service who led other top government officials like the Nigeria Immigrations Service and others from different Formations, Agencies, then, Captains of Industry, Businessmen and women, Notable politicians from the federal, states and local governments and other prominent members of the society.
During the reception, one of Chief Olukoya’s children, Chief Idris Tele- Olukoya proudly read his biography, highlighting their father’s remarkable achievements in almost all spheres of life. Another proud son of Chief Olukoya, Chief Superintendent of Custom, SA Olukoya, a gallant Team leader with the Joint Border Patrol Team of the Nigeria Custom Service was on ground to ensure that all guests were lavishly entertained in all sense of the word.
The elder son of Chief Olukoya, Alhaji Lateef Tele – Olukoya gave a first narrative of their father’s exploits politically, socially, spiritually and economically.
Furthermore, Chief Idris Oloruntele Olukoya, informed, guests and attendees that one of the most significant reasons for the burial anniversary was launching of a special foundation in honour of their father.
According to Idris, the Tele Olukoya Foundation, is dedicated to continuing their father’s legacy of generosity and community service. stating that “in the lifetime their father, he was a giver like no other, touching countless lives around him,”
Born on July 7, 1938, Chief Olukoya was a distinguished alumnus of Epe Grammar School and went on to become a prominent politician who once led the Lagos’ State delegation to the 1994 National CONFAB, during General Sani Abacha’s regime, a businessman, and philanthropist. He was a man of orchestrated ability and enviably mellifluous of easily relating with people, the more reason his associates cut across from the very highly placed persons to the very lowly placed persons.

Chief Olukoya’s social life was equally impressive, with memberships in clubs such as Eko Club, Island Club, and Ikoyi Club. He was also a board member at the University of Lagos during the tenure of Professor Jelili Omotola.
He was a member of notable political parties that includes but not limited to, UPN, DPN, and AD, where he served as Special Adviser to Late Governor Alhaji Lateef Jakande.
Chief Olukoya also founded Okemagba High School, which he later donated to the whole community, established Tele Olukoya Sawmill in Eredo, contributing significantly to the educational and economic development of the region. He was National President of the United Muslim Council of Nigeria. A devout Muslim, who sponsored numerous pilgrims to Mecca, and his philanthropic efforts reached far beyond his immediate community.
Renowned for his strong friendships with national figures like Basorun MKO Abiola, Aare Abdul-Azeez Arisekola Also, Gen. Sani Abacha, and Chief Obafemi Awolowo, Chief Olukoya was a man of vision, leadership, and compassion. His legacy lives on through his family, friends, and the newly established Tele Olukoya Foundation.
As the community remembers his legacy, they pray for Almighty Allah’s forgiveness and grant him eternal peace.
Late Chief MukadamTele Olukoya died in 1999 about 25 years ago at the age of 61 years. He was survived by 27 children including Alhaji (Chief) SA Olukoya, a Chief Superintendent of Customs.
